About Mapua

Catch the Mapua Ferry from Mapua to Rabbit Island, or take a short cruise around the beautiful Waimea Estuary. Rabbit Island is a public reserve offering a range of activities including barbeque, swimming, walking, and mountain bike tracks. Local wildlife include the white heron, royal spoonbill, shags and oyster catchers. Fishing from the Rabbit Island bridge is popular or white baiting, or you can surf-cast along the beach front.
Abel Tasman National Park
Located a short 40 minute drive from Almyra Waterfront Lodge, we are your gateway to the stunning Abel Tasman National Park. This beautiful coastal National Park is ideal for day trips of relaxation or adventure. Golden sand beaches line the shores, framed by granite cliffs and native forestry.
Walking and hiking in the park are popular activities. There are a variety of tracks, ranging from short easy walks to multi-day difficult hiking tracks. Some of the tracks in the Abel Tasman National Park include:
- The Abel Tasman Coast Track - a 3 - 5 day intermediate hike
- Harwoods Hole Track - an easy 45 minute one way walk
- Wainui Falls Track - an easy 30 minute one way walk
- Inland Track - a difficult 3 day hike
Sea kayaking and sea canoeing are also very popular activities. Kayaking allows access to some of the beautiful sheltered coves that hiking tracks bypass. Because the tracks are very near to the shore, visitors can both kayak and hike in the same day.
Other activities in the Abel Tasman National Park include:
- Kayaking and Sea Canoeing
- Bird Watching
- Mountain Biking
- Snorkelling
- Swimming
- Sun Bathing
